You will have ample time to send us all missing materials before we evaluate your application.
1. Students who were previously enrolled in a degree program at UD and now wish to return to the University after an absence of 15 months or more. 2. Students who have already earned a University of Delaware degree.
Readmissions decisions are made on an on-going basis, but must first go through the particular college to which you applied. It could be a few weeks until you hear from The Office of the Registrar once your application is complete, including a submitted application fee.
If you left the University within 15 months, you simply need to contact your previous academic advisor. If you left the University more than 15 months ago, you must complete the Readmission Application. All of our application forms can be found at http://admissions.udel.edu/forms/. These applications are accepted by the Office of the Registrar but also reviewed by the academic department in which you were previously enrolled.
Acknowledgement letters will be sent out to all applicants on an ongoing basis. You can email a request for a change of major to admissions@udel.edu. Please put "transfer change of major" in the subject line so that it can be directed to the appropriate officer. Timing is crucial for requesting a change of major as the reading of transfer files has already begun.
We will begin reviewing transfer applications for spring 2010 soon. Students are notified on a rolling basis. If you are a current freshman applying as a transfer, in most cases, we canot make a decision until we have seen fall semester grades. Transfer applicants who were previously denied admission to the University of Delaware are reminded that their decison letter included the following statement from Director of Admissions, Louis Hirsh: "We normally expect transfer applicants to have completed at least two years of transferable coursework at an accredited college or university." Please read the transfer guidelines found on our website, especially those pertaining to any pre-requisites and GPAs needed for certain majors. http://www.admissions.udel.edu/files/documents/Spring2010TransferGuideli...
Applications are received and acknowledged on an on-going basis. During our busiest times of the year (November-January), it may take a few weeks to receive an acknowledgement letter due to the volume of applications our staff is carefully processing. Likewise, we will mail applicants a letter if we haven't received any required application items well before the Admissions decision is made beginning in mid-April for Fall.
It is not possible for anyone in the Admissions Office to sit down with you and go over your current transcript. The University of Delaware accepts credits from regionally accredited institutions in which the students received a grade of "C" or better in college-level courses (not remedial.) Pass/Fail grades are not accepted. To receive a University of Delaware degree, admitted students must complete a minimum of either the first 90 or last 30 credits, full- or part-time, at the University of Delaware. For more information, go to the transfer evaluation webpage: http://primus.nss.udel.edu/transfercredit/index.action
If your documents (i.e. letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.) were sent to us, please do not resend them. Our turn-around time from actually receiving your documents, properly processing them, and satisfying the item(s) on the online check-list could take a few weeks. If your school has told you they sent the documents, it is safe to assume that we have them and they are in the processing stage. If we still require a document when your file is read, we will contact you.
In reviewing freshman transfer applications, we will base our decision on both your first semester there and whether we would have admitted you directly from high school as a freshman. The farther along you go in your college program, the less the high school record and standardized testing will influence our decision. Transfer applicants who were previously denied admission to the University of Delaware are reminded that their decision letter included the following statement from Director of Admissions, Louis Hirsh: "We normally expect transfer applicants to have completed at least two years of transferable coursework at an accredited college or university." Transfer applicants who were denied admissions as a freshman this past fall will not receive a decision from us until we have final spring grades from the current institution. There are no exceptions to this policy. Please read the transfer guidelines found on our website, especially those pertaining to any pre-requisites and GPAs needed for certain majors.
Acknowledgement letters will be sent out to all applicants on an ongoing basis. To check the status of your application, please visit http://www.udel.edu/checkyourstatus. You'll need to consult with the financial aid office here concerning your grants and loans and what UD could provide. Genereally speaking, transfer students are not eligible for our own merit-based monies, but FA can answer questions about other grants and loans. You can reach them by phone at (302) 831-8761.
No, unfortunately we do not offer academic scholarships to transfer students. Transfer students may be eligible for need-based aid.
Students (DE residents) who also completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may be eligible to receive the SEED Scholarship while in the Associate in Arts Program. For more information, click here: http://www.udel.edu/associateinarts/ You must complete a FAFSA in order to be considered for the SEED Scholarship.
This year, many Delawareans are being notified of their admissions on a rolling basis. If you applied for Fall 2010 freshman admission, your application is complete, and you meet the guidelines of the UD Commitment to Delawareans (http://www.udel.edu/commitment/requirements.html), then we will be notifying you shortly.
Some things to bear in mind:
1. We start mailing decisions the first Friday in January, and we continue mailing decisions each Friday thereafter.
2. We do not start reading an application until it is complete. "Complete" means that we must have your application, official transcripts of high school work completed, your admissions essay, officially reported SAT or ACT scores, and at least one letter of recommendation. You may check the status of your application online (http://www.udel.edu/checkyourstatus).
3. Once your application is complete, it generally takes the Admissions Committee several weeks to review it and send out a letter. The reason is that we have received over 2,200 applications from Delawareans, and that's a lot of files to read! Rest assured that we are as eager to get an answer to you as you are to receive one.
4. The months of January-April are some of the busiest in the Office of Admissions. If you have questions and would like to consult with our staff, we recommend using the Instant Chat on our website at http://admissions.udel.edu on Monday-Friday, 8:30-5 p.m.
Some scholarship information is listed in the UD Admissions Application, but most financial aid is dependent on the amount of available money the school has for a particular semester and the needs of the students attending. The first step in finding out whether you qualify for financial aid is to file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form between January 1 and and March 2 for aid beginning in the following Fall term. For more information, contact the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid.
You'll need to consult with the financial aid office here concerning your grants and loans and what UD could provide. Genereally speaking, transfer students are not eligible for our own merit-based monies, but FA can answer questions about other grants and loans. You can reach them by phone at (302) 831-8761.
If you've started an online application we ask that you complete what you've started in full and submit it. It is in your best interest to not start a second application.
All non-resident freshman applicants will receive their decision from the University of Delaware mid-March.
If you have not yet applied to the University, simply check the box on our application or on the Common Application supplement which asks whether you would like to be considered for the University Honors Program. A second essay is required for consideration. http://admissions.udel.edu/apply If you already have applied and now would like to be considered for the University Honors Program, you can email or mail us an essay responding to the following question: "Over one third of Delaware students double major or pursue a major with multiple minors. All students participate in discovery learning - from study abroad to undergraduate research to service-learning. Honors students are especially inclined to be interdisciplinary, creative, or entrepreneurial. What do you hope to accomplish and contribute as a member of the Honors community? Where will your Delaware experiences and degree take you?" Please include your name and UD ID number at the top of your essay.
*Being an Honors student at UD involves the true cultivation of the mind. We would like to see how your mind responds to a question such as that above. For this reason, we are interested in an academic rather than a personal growth experience. A brief essay (1-2 pages) would be fine. Note: This essay should be in addition to the essay you are submitting for section III ("Student Essays"), though it may expand upon that essay.*
Please be assured that if your materials were sent to us, that we have them and are working feverishly to get them processed and get your checklist items satisfied. With the volume of mail we receive on a daily basis, it is not possible to process any document on the same day it is received. In general, there is a 2-3 week time span between receiving your materials and letting you know we've received and processed them. Please check back at our website www.udel.edu/checkyourstatus to follow your application's progress. We will send you a letter indicating any documents or materials that we still require when we go to read your file. Please do not ask your guidance office to resend any documents.
In some cases, the $75 application fee can be waived. If there is a financial hardship AND the applicant previously had a CollegeBoard fee waiver (used for SAT), then a copy of the fee waiver form should be forwarded to our office. Also, a guidance counselor can write a request to waive the fee, if there is a demonstrated hardship. It should be forwarded to our office (fax use 302-831-4599).
An open house (Blue and Golden Saturday, Discovery Days) is an all-day Saturday event, usually held between the hours of 9:00-3:00. An open house encompasses more aspects of campus than just Admissions information. Students and parents will have the opportunity to speak with representatives from the various academic areas on campus as well as representatives from our many student organizations and campus offices. Admissions presentations and campus tours are also offered at all open houses. Multiple residence halls are available to tour as well. Attending an open house is the most convenient way to learn the most about the University of Delaware.
Weekday and Saturday information sessions and tours focus on general information about the University of Delaware, especially as it relates to Admissions and financial aid. These sessions are led by an Admissions officer. No other campus personnel participate in these sessions, but you may schedule an appointment with a specific department prior to coming to campus during the week. (Most University of Delaware offices are closed on Saturdays). Ninety minute walking tours are then led by one of our Blue Hen Ambassadors who are current students. These tours include entrance into two student centers, a classroom building, dining hall, the Center for the Arts, and one residence hall room. Total time of your visit is typically 2-1/2 hours.
The University Visitors Center is closed on Sundays and information sessions and tours are not available. However, you may print our online self-guided tour at http://admissions.udel.edu/selfguide.pdf and view our beautiful campus on your own. Unfortunately, residence halls are not accessible to you on a self-guided tour.
Inasmuch as many of us enjoy four-legged friends, pets are not permitted in any University building, with a few exceptions. You can reference the policy, as set forth by the Office of the Executive Vice President here: http://www.udel.edu/ExecVP/policies/facilities/2-16.html
Interviews are not required for admissions. However, interviews can be scheduled by calling our office at 302-831-8124. Interviews are evaluative in nature.

We are happy to review applicants who have GED's. How your application is assessed will depend on how long you have been out of school, your GED scores, and what we can learn about you from reviewing other information that is in your file (for example, in addition to completing a GED, you should consider taking a few courses at a local college so that we have a better sense of your readiness to handle coursework at Delaware). We will still need to see transcripts of any coursework you have ever taken at a high school or college, but the longer you have been out of school, the less heavily we will weigh your high school grades.
Graduating early is not always a good idea. The senior year is when students have the chance to assume leadership positions in high school by becoming a team captain or a student body officer or a president of a club or organization. It is also the time for taking additional courses that will strengthen your preparation for college, such as Advanced Placement courses. These are important parts of your social and academic development, and they significantly enhance your application for admission. In rare instances, graduating early makes sense. These are cases where students are prodigies who have advanced so swiftly that they have exhausted all the advanced academic work that their high schools can offer them. Even in these instances, it is often a better strategy to be dually enrolled at your high school and at a local colllege, where you can take college-level courses that will challenge you, but still remain engaged in the kinds of school activities that will make you a well-rounded person.
The University does not sponsor or organize overnight visits. However, if you know a current University of Delaware student already living on campus, feel free to call them and arrange an overnight visit. Overnight guests are welcome in the residence halls. The Admissions Office does not arrange for overnights.
Two SAT Subject tests of the student's choosing are recommended, especially for applicants to the University Honors Program, but not required.
We offer campus walking tours every day of the week, excluding Sundays. Tours begin with a 40-minute information session and are followed by a 90-minute walking tour of campus led by a student tour guide. Reservations are recommended. More information can be found at http://admissions.udel.edu/visit/infosession.shtml. Information Sessions and Walking Tours are limited during the month of December and January. Please consult our web site for specific days and times of availability.
